DESCRIPTION:On April 19\, 2026\, from 9:00–10:00 PM EST\, a successful Kidney Disease Awareness Webinar was conducted via the Zoom platform to create awareness among the Bhutanese community in Ontario by the health coordinator of ABO\, Anuka Pradhan.\n\n \n\nThe session featured the Founder and Executive Director of the Bhutan Kidney Foundation\, Sir Tashi Namgay\, who shared valuable insights on kidney health and emphasized that awareness is a powerful tool for early detection\, prevention\, and informed healthcare decisions.\n\n \n\nThe webinar served as an important platform to educate participants about kidney disease\, including its risk factors\, warning signs\, preventive strategies\, and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.\nDuring the session\, emphasis was placed on the fact that awareness is a powerful tool in the fight against kidney disease. Increasing awareness empowers individuals with knowledge\, encourages early detection\, promotes preventive action\, and supports timely healthcare decisions.\n\n \n\nThe Founder also highlighted the challenges faced by kidney failure patients\, including family burden and financial crises\, while sharing the Foundation’s support for underprivileged individuals\, particularly those from rural areas.\n\n \n\nThe session witnessed active participation and positive engagement from community members\, reflecting the importance of health education initiatives within the Bhutanese community in Ontario. The initiative aimed to bridge the information gap for the Bhutanese diaspora in Canada\, focusing on life-saving knowledge regarding stroke recognition and management. \nKey Highlights of the Session \nThe webinar provided a comprehensive overview of how strokes impact global health\, noting that while stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide\, 90% of cases are preventable through timely recognition. \nSister Anuka Pradhan and the BSF team covered several critical areas. \n\nEarly Recognition: Identifying the signs of a stroke and the importance of “Acting FAST.”\nPrevention: Promoting healthy lifestyle choices and regular blood pressure monitoring.\nEmergency Response: Encouraging early hospital visits to minimize long-term disability.\nSurvivor Support: Providing resources and guidance for supporting those recovering from a stroke.\n\nA Global Collaboration \nThe event was graced by the presence of the Founder of the Bhutan Stroke Foundation\, who joined live to support the initiative. The Foundation expressed its sincere appreciation to the ABO President and Sister Anuka Pradhan for their dedication to “reaching the unreached” beyond the borders of Bhutan. \nBy fostering these international partnerships\, the ABO continues to strengthen community engagement and ensure that Bhutanese residents in Ontario have access to vital health advocacy and support.

SUMMARY:Empowering Bhutanese Community with Key Insights on Ontario Rental Rights
DESCRIPTION:The Association of Bhutanese in Ontario (ABO) hosted an online information session on the Residential Tenancies Act 2006 Ontario. The 45-minute session held on March 1\, 2026\, aimed at sharing the legal protections that are offered by the act with Bhutanese living in the province of Ontario.\n\n \n\nThe Residential Tenancies Act applies to most rental housing options in the province\, including apartments\, houses\, basement units\, mobile homes and some care homes (Residential Tenancies Act\, 2006\, s.1). The act not only protects the rights of tenants and landlords with regards to rent\, evictions\, and other services\, it also provides a dispute resolution system between landlords and tenants known as the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB). The LTB conducts hearings to determine resolution of rent and maintenance disputes\, and accepts complaints from both parties.\n\n \n\nUnder the Residential Tenancies Act\, any tenant in Ontario is entitled to a tenancy agreement in writing\, which includes the landlord’s legal name\, address\, and signature. Within 21 days from the start of tenancy\, such a written agreement must be provided by the landlord. If the landlord fails to do so\, the Residential Tenancy Act allows the tenant to withhold rent.\n\n \n\nThe ABO informed attendees about the rights of both tenants and landlords\, as protected by the act. Tenants have rights to a safe and well-maintained home that is private and free from harassment. It also protects tenants from unlawful rent increases\, unlawful eviction\, and ensures that the tenant has access to vital services such as heat\, water\, and electricity.\n\n \n\nLandlords have the right to collect rent on time and increase rent as per the province’s guidelines. Rent increases are usually allowed once every 12 months\, with a 90 days written notice. Apart from rent protection\, landlords have the right to screen tenants before renting out a property\, as well as to apply for tenant eviction for legal reasons. However\, legal evictions require a proper written notice and an order from the LTB.\n\n \n\nIt is important to note that the Residential Tenancy Act overrides any private agreements between landlord and tenant.\n\n \n\nThis advocacy session included information gathered from research on the Residential Tenancies Act 2006 Ontario and related guidelines at the time of presentation and are subject to change. The ABO shares a disclaimer that tenants or landlords with specific circumstances are encouraged to seek advice from appropriate authorities\, including the LTB.\n\n \n\nThe Residential Tenancies Act is an important resource for any Ontario resident and can be found online on the Government of Ontario’s website for reference.
