Our Story

The Association of Bhutanese in Ontario (ABO) didn’t begin in a boardroom; it began with a simple need for connection. What started as a small, informal gathering of Bhutanese families in Ontario eventually found its digital home in 2019 through a WeChat group known as Druk Canada.

In those early days, Druk Canada served as a vital lifeline for newcomers, students, and families navigating life in a new country. It was a place to share resources, celebrate our heritage, and ensure that no Bhutanese person felt alone in the vast landscape of Ontario.

As our community grew, so did the need for formal leadership and a clear vision. Our journey has been defined by the dedicated individuals who stepped forward to serve:

The Foundation (2019–2021)

Under the initial leadership of our first President, Tshering, the group transitioned from a casual network into a recognized community body, laying the groundwork for everything to come.

The Transition (2021–2023

In 2021, Druk Canada held its landmark election. With Tshering stepping back, Karma was elected as President, leading the community through a pivotal period of growth and increased engagement.

A New Identity (2023–2025)

On December 17, 2023—coinciding with our auspicious Bhutanese National Day—Thinley Jamtsho was elected as the next President. Under his leadership, the organization underwent a significant transformation, officially rebranding as the Association of Bhutanese in Ontario (ABO) to better reflect our regional focus and professional aspirations.

Present Day

Today, the ABO is led by President Deepjal Pradhan, who continues to build on this rich legacy, ensuring that our association remains a pillar of support, culture, and unity for all Bhutanese residents in Ontario.
